Ever since quarantine, I've really started to try and implement small changes into my daily routine to help my overall physical and mental health. Today, I'm going to share the 5 things that I truly believe have made a big difference in how I feel over the past few months and will continue to try and implement into my daily life moving forward.

Walking

I never used to put much thought into how much I was walking or how many steps I would get in a day until moving to New York City and my legs started getting sore because of how much walking I was doing. But, once quarantine started and I was working from home, I decided to make it a goal of mine to get to 10K steps in a day. I was sitting around more than normal and not getting nearly the same amount of movement in a day as I used to. Slowly but surely, I started to look forward to taking a walk during my lunch break or after dinner. I felt like it was my time of the day to take some time alone where I could call a friend, listen to a podcast, or just be with my thoughts. Not only is walking so good for your physical health but I was also finding that it was helping me feel more at peace throughout my day and really helping my overall mental health. Working from home or not, I am definitely going to keep up with this goal and look forward to my daily walks everyday.

Drinking Water

A few years ago, I would’ve never believed that I was actually recommending to drink more water. I used to be an avid diet coke drinker and hated the “taste” of water so much that I would barely ever drink water. Even after quitting diet coke a few years back, I still wasn’t drinking nearly enough water. So once quarantine started, I decided to step up my game and I ordered a 32 oz hydroflask with a straw lid to encourage me to drink more water. I started off with a goal of drinking 3 hydroflasks worth of water a day and all I can say is that I am now completely addicted. I can easily drink at least 5 hydroflasks worth of water a day now and even started not letting myself have any coffee until I’ve drunk at least one bottle worth of water. I can easily already see a difference in my energy levels, my cravings, and my skin has cleared up so much. This is definitely something I’m going to keep up for the rest of my life because of all the positive effects I have seen in my body so far.

Waking Up Early

Don’t get me wrong, I love my sleep. I have to get at least 7-8 hours of sleep a night in order to feel like myself and be productive. However, now that I don’t have to spend time getting ready for work or commuting, I’ve had more time in the morning to do things that make me happy. Normally, I’ll get in a morning workout because I love getting it over with and not having to think about getting it done the rest of the day. On other days, I’ll go on a long walk and listen to a podcast or music to get some fresh air since I spend so much time working in my apartment throughout the rest of the day. Once I’m finished walking or working out, I’ll try to also get in a 5 min meditation and potentially journal a little as well. I’ve really been loving having this time to myself in the morning because I feel like it gets me motivated and starts my day off on a positive note. Even if I do go back into the office and don’t have as much time in the morning, I’m definitely going to continue waking up early to carve out some time for myself in the morning.
